I build installations. If you like what you see and would like to include me in a show please send me an e-mail at urbanscout [at sign] gmail [dot sign] com. Please include the subject heading “installation.” Thanks!

The District of Columbia Arts Center flew me out to D.C. to build the following installation for a show called the “New Future” curated by Kristina Bilonick.
Art y Facts
This part of the installation includes primitive tools I have made including; cedar bark cordage, pine needle baskets, brain-tanned animal hides, a soap-stone pipe, basic stone tools among other things. I like using the museum look and encasing them in clear boxes with a framed key to identify and learn about the objects.
Photos
Here I framed some of my favorite photographs over the years as well as framing some not so beautiful documentary photos for a “how-to.” In this particular instance I used photos showing how to make “Rhus Juice,” Dandelion Tea and glue from pine pitch and charcoal.
Tipi
I lived in this childs sized tipi for a summer in the NW and it ended in disaster, of which you can read all about if you search my blog. I used it as part of this installation. Inside a small TV played a looped DVD of the Urban Scout short of me doing the bow-drill and buying coffee. I also had instructions and materials for people to make cordage. I also wear my brain-tanned buckskin shorts and brain-tanned raccoon/trucker hat both made from animals whose lives ended at the hands of the destructive car culture.
Performance
During the art opening I hung out in my tipi and taught people how to make natural cordage. During the height I performed a demonstration of the Bow-drill method of friction fire.
