I throw a party every year called the Nuclear Winter Formal. It feels almost like a prophetic vision now that Portland has played host to nuclear bomb terror drills. With media hype and military drills, the threat of nuclear warfare has risen again to the forefronts of our imaginations and reminded us of our worst fears! In spite of it all…civilization continues devouring the planet at an accelerating rate. Most people might poo-poo you with doom and gloom visions of the future but I say, why fear it? Why not celebrate it? Hell, why not take it a step further and prepare for it by celebrating before it actually happens? The Nuclear Winter Formal invites people of all kinds to come together to celebrate the end of civilization. I facilitate a multi-media glimpse of a post apocalyptic world, conceptualized by local artists.
Each formal has had a particular formula:
Musical acts, usually punk bands such as The Hunches, but sometimes DJ’s such as DJ Copy. I usually have a post-apocalyptic fashion show or a costume contest judged by local clothing designers. These people win silly prizes like the Mad Max trilogy on DVD or a survival hammock. Sometimes we have paintings on the wall by local painters, sometimes I do educational performance art, and I always set up my make-out tipi. A backdrop of Portland in flames hangs from the wall for patrons to get their prom style photos taken.
